The number of incidents of data breaches for big and small businesses over the last year has been staggering, with the amounts of personal data of various customers, clients and partners among others reaching into the millions. Explained in this article is what to do if there is a data breach.

Many instances because of corporations not having proper security protocols in place to reduce or eliminate the risks of data breaches.
Irrespective of the information that has been leaked there are steps you can take to ensure your safety.
The first step that should be taken is the changing of passwords over all of your platforms, not just the one that was breached. It is normal for people to use the same password for a variety of online forums, accounts and social media profiles. This makes it much easier for hackers to use your credentials over everything you have an account on due to the familiarity of password use.
It is recommended that you keep different passwords for each site, and note the passwords offline to keep track of them.
2 Factor Authentication
Many devices and logins now utilise a 2-factor authentication process, such as emails, internet banking and e-commerce stores.
This may seem a chore to some but it is the most secure layer of security to adopt on whatever device or platform you use. If your information has been compromised in a breach and a hacker has a hold of your information, they will not be able to log in past the additional security layer.

Bank accounts and credit card numbers can be leaked in the event of a data breach, so it would be highly recommended to request a new debit or credit card and cancel the previous, especially if your account details on various sites are stored.
You can also use UPI for payments to protect your bank and card details from being leaked. Some banks even allow a virtual card with limited funds validity and a different number when using cards online.
Your credentials are mostly used for instances of identity theft, where a hacker can use them to secure large loans and other services. If you’re unsure of what to do if there is a data breach, request credit reports every quarter to see if any unusual activity has taken place with regards to unknown loans or large payments that you are not aware of and contact your credit card supplier and bank immediately upon discovery to contact the relevant authorities.
