Facebook’s Social Media Accounts Hacked


Last week, hackers hacked Facebook’s Twitter and Instagram account as a publicity stunt to promote their own security services. OurMine, the Saudi-based white hat hacking group, took to Facebook’s Twitter and Instagram accounts leaving a slightly misleading message, implying that the Facebook website itself had been hacked.

The message read: “Hi, we are OurMine. Well, even Facebook is hackable but at least their security is better than Twitter.”

From there, OurMine gave out its website and email address, as well as an open invite to Facebook for them to get in touch “to improve your accounts [sic] security.”

In the event that users were in doubt as to who was liable for this activity, OurMine also posted a photo of their own logo on the company’s Twitter and Instagram feeds. Twitter confirmed that the hack was performed by a third party and that Facebook’s account was locked as soon as Twitter had been made aware of the situation.

A spokesperson for Twitter said: “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we locked the compromised accounts and are working closely with our partners at Facebook to restore them.”

This isn’t the first time…

This is the latest in a series of high-profile social media attacks performed by OurMine. Last month they manage to hack the Twitter accounts of the NFL and 15 of its American football teams only a week before the Super Bowl.

It is thought that OurMine found the login details of these sports teams via third-party social media management platform Khoros. According to the Khoros website, they have implemented numerous security measures “throughout the organization to provide full transparency and peace of mind for Khoros customers that their personal data and information are in good hands.”
