GDS Mulls ‘Basic ID Accounts’ Potential for Online Services

With the development of the ID assurance platform still underway, the Government Digital Service is now looking into the potential of “basic identity accounts” for individuals unable to use GOV.UK Verify. Such accounts would allow their users to access “low risk” online services in spite of the fact that they have been unsuccessful in verifying their identity previously.
Users of the prospective basic identity accounts would be able to access a limited number of online services such as the tax credit service rather than having to take the more traditional and time-consuming route of manual form completion.
The next phase of this recent trial is to analyse the results and determine whether this is a viable option moving forward and which services this can safely be aligned with.
