SDN Future Proof Networking

Software Defined Networking or SDN is a different approach to computer networking, started and evolved from the work done in UC Berkeley and Stanford University around 2008. Since then it has evolved to become a great step for next generation carrier and services. Currently, SDN is attracting a great deal of interest from various service providers, telecom industries and industry associations.

SDN started with the goal of providing flexibly and speed to the provisioning and re-provisioning of a network. Nowadays it is very relevant as the network workload changes very dynamically due to a combination of  virtualized computing and  the inflaming effect of multi-tenancy and high levels of job workload multiplexing associated with “cloud computing”. The OpenFlow™ protocol is a foundational element for building SDN solutions. Other names in the industry that are openly supporting the technology are Cisco, Juniper Networks, IBM, NEC, Big Switch Networks, Red Hat and VMware. Industry experts are suggesting that the time is right now for SDN even if it is in the early stages. Even buyers are pushing the use of SDN which in turn is greatly enhancing the chances of SDN.

SDN is the perfect way to virtualize current networks, making them easy to configure and maintain. It introduces a layer of software between the metallic network components and the network administrators who configure these networks. This gives them the opportunity to make easy changes and modifications to their networks on a software interface rather than being physically present in the data center to make the necessary changes. The architecture of SDN decouples the network control and forwarding functions enabling the network control to become directly programmable and the underlying infrastructure to be abstracted for applications and network services ,in turn making the whole network to be controlled via a software interface.

At the end of the day SDN is an emerging architecture that is dynamic, manageable, cost-effective and adaptable, making it ideal for the high bandwidth, dynamic nature of today’s applications.
