Business Intelligence (BI) practitioners have been inundated by a seemingly unending barrage of marketing messages promoting, Data Discovery, and In-Memory business intelligence. This article describes Strategy Companion’s new patent-pending “Recombinant BI” which combines the best elements of Traditional BI and Data Discovery, while providing the scalability needed for Big Data environments.
WHAT IS RECOMBINANT BI?
“Recombinant BI” is a new, patent-pending approach to Business Intelligence which takes its name from the biological terms “Recombinant DNA” and “Genetic Recombination” which are both characterized by the remixing and combining of DNA sequences into new sequences which did not exist before. In the same way, Recombinant BI makes it very easy for business users to take full advantage of their corporate data and to mix, combine, then remix and recombine it as needed, on their own, in order to get the answers they need to the many multi-faceted questions being asked every day. Recombinant BI frees business users from the constraints of traditional OLAP BI and greatly increases the flexibility and value of all the data contained in OLAP and other data sources.
Another key aspect of Recombinant BI is that each business user can save and share for re-use by others the new combinations of corporate data they have created. This is important because of the time, domain expertise, and effort which could be involved in creating a new and useful combination of data providing valuable new business intelligence insights into the state of your business. The ability for business users to name, save, and share these new combinations of corporate data means no one – including the original creator – needs to re-invent the wheel and spend time figuring out and creating what has already been created. Business users can always save their newly-created combinations of business intelligence for their own re-use; their ability to share them with other users is subject to your organization’s comfort level and policies regarding such sharing, visibility, and re-use.
More flexible business intelligence
Recombinant BI also means that business users do not need to go back to IT to ask them to create a new data combination, view, or aggregation so that it can be available to all users. Not only does this save valuable IT time and resources, even more importantly, it makes existing data sources much more flexible and useful, while simultaneously removing the infamous “IT Bottleneck” which forces business users to wait for IT to evaluate and implement the desired changes. By contributing their work to a shared repository of new analytical groups and patterns, other users can now easily see, re-use, and take advantage of this saved prior work – whether they use it as-is or as a building block to create still more custom groups, which in turn can themselves be saved and re-used by others. This ongoing process greatly accelerates corporate knowledge-sharing and allows your company to maximize the value of your business users’ domain expertise while simultaneously increasing the value of your corporate data.
